My Magic Hour

In photography, “golden hour” (aka “magic hour”) is a period shortly after sunrise or before sunset during which daylight is redder and softer than when the sun is higher in the sky.

I have had several friends in Miami--or on a Caribbean Vacation--take the most the glorious pictures of this “magic hour” with a cocktail in hand and a smile on their faces.  When I see these pictures, I sometimes close my eyes and imagine myself in these places, enjoying this beautiful scenery.

My reality, however, is that my “magic hour” happens around 5:20 a.m., when everyone else is sleeping, the house is still clean, and I can hear my own thoughts.  Every morning when my alarm clock goes off at 5:10 a.m., I contemplate whether I should snooze just a bit longer, but I’m always so happy when I get up and get this time to myself.

I take a few minutes after getting downstairs to my kitchen to reflect on how blessed I am; how no matter how difficult the day prior was, I am fortunate to have a beautiful family, a job that I love, and my health.  I then proceed to review my emails from the night before (in silence), get my water ready, and hop on the treadmill for my morning workout. I treasure these moments because just sixty minutes (let’s be real--thirty minutes) later, my house will turn into total chaos, and I will be dreaming of this “magic hour” again.

How do you spend your “magic hour?”
