DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS, HOW OLD?:

3 kids, 5 years, 4 years and (almost) 1-year-old.

WHERE DO YOU WORK & WHAT DO YOU DO?

I am co-founder and CEO of Fairygodboss, the largest career community for women. We provide millions of women with career connections, jobs, community advice and the hard-to-find intel on how companies treat women.

ARE YOU AN ENTREPRENEUR? IF YES, WHERE DID THE FOUNDATION OF YOUR BUSINESS STEM FROM?

Yes, I am. Fairygodboss was founded from my personal experience when I was suddenly fired from my executive role at a large publishing company. At the time, I was two-months pregnant and hiding it. I found myself in the position of going on interviews while trying to conceal my pregnancy, and wanting to know more than ever about leave policies, work-life balance and how a company’s culture supported women. It’s so hard to ask these questions in an interview without feeling stigmatized, and I wanted to hear directly from other women about what they thought of company culture and how they handled these delicate situations.  I couldn’t find what I was looking for on the internet, and that’s how the idea of Fairygodboss came to be—the idea that if women share their workplace experiences and collaborate with one another, we can improve the workplace for all women and help them find the answers to those hard-to-ask questions.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE KIDS/FAMILY, WORK, AND SELF-CARE?

Ruthless prioritization! I try to start each day with a clean slate and be a realistic with my goals for the day.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACE AS A WORKING MOM:

Time management! There’s a lot to do in balancing running a startup and a family at the same time so ruthless prioritization is challenging (but important).

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST TIME SAVING TIP FOR WORKING MOMS: 

Do as much preparation as you can! For example, if you want to make sure your family eats healthy, home-cooked meals, spend time on the weekends meal prepping and cooking meals you can thaw. It’s one of my biggest week-night timesavers!

DO YOU HAVE WORKING MOM GUILT? IF SO,HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT?

Most of the time, no. Being a founder of a growing company is incredibly time consuming, so I don’t have much time or energy to dwell on any negative feelings, and I really focus on prioritizing my time so that I’m able to find some semblance of balance and spend time with my family.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN YOU HAVE IT ALL?

I’m not a big fan of the formulation of this question and framework, but I do believe people reap the consequences of how they decide to invest their time and need to be deliberate and intentional about it. I believe there are very personal trade-offs that one must make between career and family, self and friendships, and that it’s physically impossible to be doing everything at the same time at the highest level of attention. That said, I think there are “seasons” to life that make it possible to experience things more intensely in certain periods of life than others. For example, after you have a baby, you may decide or need to spend more time focused on your health and your child and family. And after you launch a startup, you may have to be much more devoted to your career, etc.
