Meet Rebecca, a fierce and fearless super momma, nurse practitioner, & founder of Hair For You Foundation

Meet Rebecca! She is a nurse practitioner at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago in the oncology unit, and a fierce super-momma to her 9 month old son, which is the best and hardest job she has ever had. However, her journey into motherhood was anything but typical because she had to use a surrogate to carry her son due to her health history.

Rebecca is a two-time rhabdomyosarcoma survivor, a form of cervical cancer. As a junior in high school at the age of 16, when most people were looking forward to getting their license, Rebecca underwent nine months of chemotherapy. Later, at age 19 Rebecca relapsed and had a total hysterectomy followed by five months of intense chemotherapy.

While going through chemotherapy Rebecca lost all of her hair twice. While Rebecca’s family was able to afford a wig for her she soon realized that not all families were as lucky and that in many cases buying a wig for medical hair loss is not covered by insurance companies.  She realized the vast difference a wig made in her life while enduring chemotherapy at such a young age.

This is where the Hair For You Foundation came to fruition.  This amazing 501c3 nonprofit organization, founded in 2003 through Lutheran General Hospital, distributes funds to assist in the purchase of a wig, due to medical hair loss, to children ages 18 years old and younger being treated in the state of Illinois.

Our wish is to increase confidence in one’s outward appearance and to help provide the inner-confidence needed as they face each day. We hope to improve their overall well-being while experiencing an overwhelming and difficult time in their life.

Rebecca wanted others to feel the deeply positive impact she felt when going through something well beyond her 16 years.  She wanted others to feel a sense of normalcy when almost nothing was “normal” about their lives.

Coming up on September 14th, will be the 4th annual family fun day at Tamarak Day Camp. There will be raffles every half hour, character visits, a performance from Stages Performing Arts, the Lincolnshire Firetruck, a bouncy house and inflatable obstacle course, face painting and mini train rides, as well as food and raffle tickets for sale. Beyond the raffles and food, it's a free event.

Check it out and support this amazing momma and her incredible story!
